My Old House Online

An online community for people who love old houses.

I am not computer literate.
What does it mean that someone want to be 'my friend'?
Am I not supposed to be courteous and friendly to all posters here?

Actually, I think that none of us know. I sent you the email invite,so the system automatically recorded us as friends. From what I have noticed, it has something to do with what pictures who is allowed to see. Since this is Old House Journal instead of Facebook that the college kids play on, I am thinking that is a big nothing. Maybe there is something else that I am missing.
Hi Jane,

We do hope you will be friendly with everyone on the site, regardless of whether they are your "friend"! In a nutshell, having someone as your "friend" just allows you to find their information more easily. So if, say, you come across someone whose restoration project you're really interested in, or whose advice you really value, adding them as a friend will allow you to access their page directly from your page, without having to search for them in the big member directory (under the "Members" tab). Your friends will show up in the left-hand column of your "My Journal" page, and by clicking on their pictures, you can go to their pages and see what they're up to.

Hope this answers your question!
Thank you.
My children also helped explain about 'friends'.
I came back to the old site because it had a variety of questions and knowledgeable posters. If I only read what 'my friends' wrote I would miss a lot.
