My Old House Online

An online community for people who love old houses.

Hi, I'm new to this site, Been lurking and reading a bit here.. Mainly because i just bought a new (old house 1962) and it has a Dormer-ed roof containing 2 bedrooms and full wash room, that i plan on taking down to studs and remodeling it completely, all new pluming, electric. The main thing i am researching is how to best Insulate the ceiling while still leaving the roof sheeting vented, don't want to do a Hot Roof,  I want it to last as long as possible..  be great to hear some advice from people who have done this very thing, I know people like pic's so i attached some : )

 Thanks Bob B

The usual way, before closed cell foam, would be, from the outside in, vent chutes, 12 " fiberglass, 6mil poly vapor barrier, gypsum wall board. Be sure you have eave vents and a ridge vent. You might have to sister the rafters to get 12"
There are variation of this using solid foam insulation over the fiberglass, but they are not easy because the system is not set up to accommodate the foam, and one piece of foam doesn't meet the next one neatly, nor is it forgiving in a space that's out of square.
