My Old House Online

An online community for people who love old houses.

Hello everyone. I wanted to ask some basic info on using shellac. I looked at some house blogs, and I really like the way the shellac looks on the woodwork. A lot of the wood in my house still has the shellac on it, and I would like to refinish it.

From what I read, it doesn't seem too complex to use. The only problem I have been having is where to find the tint/dye. I have gone into a few of the stores that sell shellac, but they do not sell the aniline dye stuff. Where can I find this stuff, or is there something better/similar I can use instead? Any info would be very helpful!

I posted a big long reply about a week or so ago but it is gone! Anyway I did some experimenting and I think we have an idea on what color to use on the floors, then what color will go on the rest of the wood work. The only reason why I thought of using poly over the shellac is bec this house blogger did it (http://thisoldcrackhouse.blogspot.com/). His results came out great and didn't have any problems using a clear poly over his shellac. I wanted to put clear poly on the floors in the bathroom because of water (I didn't want the shellac to turn white). Other areas that may be prone to spilled alcohol may get the same treatment, I haven't really decided yet. As for the rest of the wood work, I did plan on using that seal coat stuff since it is shellac based as well, then wax, then buff with a fine steel wool.I have to admit that the shellac looks pretty good, even though there is better stuff out there.

Sean: your floors look great with the oil. I will have to keep that in mind when I refinish the attic.

Now I am not sure what to do with the foyer just yet. Sometime in the past they put some vinyl flooring down over some underlayment, but now there are TONS of staples that go into the regular wood floor. It looks like the floor was either stripped, or never finished in the first place. Moasic tiles of some sort would look nice.. and I could refinish the floor after fixing all those staple holes...I could paint the floor fancyish, but that might look out of place since it is the foyer. I have some time to think about it since the foyer won't be done for awhile.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!
