My Old House Online

An online community for people who love old houses.

My wife and I have built a "New-Old Victorian".  This is not a new house with Victorian trim.  We constructed our house from plans from a Victorian house built in Kansas city in 1885.  We have created a web site to highlight what is possible.
Visit http://www.castlevictorian.com  And judge it for your self.   Photos and text with many construction details, a list of suppliers and even some cost breakdown information.

Very interesting. Will have to read in detail.

Unbelievable. I love the house, and the detail that you show. I also appreciate the cost details that you include. I wish that Old House Journal would give more cost guidance like this in their stories. Without it, it is hard to know what things are feasible for different types of budgets.

Thanks Phil. I too wish that magazines and television programs that discuss renovations and construction projects would include more cost information. I know that some costs are relative based on the location, but that does not make the information useless. We have received several positive comments about including the cost-breakdown info on the web site. Sure some people have been quick to point out what they have been able to do with much less money, and that's fine, it helps to put everything in perspective. On the whole, most people have not been surprised at the total. The value of the information is not the total, but the breakdown.

Having generalized ideas about costs are important for budgeting and should be included on television shows, as well as magazines. The recent TOH show in Roxbury Ma would benefit from a $$$ perspective because (through my eyes) there is very little sense in renovating a total wreck vs. creating a new, far more elegant structure like yours. In short, putting up a building is often based on money first, and then time.

Question - did you film some significant events during the building process? It would be fascinating to see for all.

Cheers,

Ken

Wow, quite a place.

What was your total cost per square foot of living space?

John,

If I include the site prep, but not the land (60 acres), and only include the first and second floors it's about $350.00. If I include the finished part of the basement, (It has 9-foot ceilings, but otherwise is nothing special) the per square foot price drops to about $270. This is about double a nice standard new house in our area. Also includes the detached garage and barn.
