Hello, I am having new newel posts made for my exterior front porch. I am having a difficult time finding a place to purchase a Newel Post Base. The posts are 5 1/2 wide and I would like a metal base to keep the post raised about 1/4 in off the brick walkway it will be resting on.
If that is a much higher lift than you want, then I think that you could improvise. For example, if you only want a small lift, you could screw 3 or 4 very large stainless steel hex bolts into the bottoms of the newels, so that they would rest on the hex heads, providing a rust free shim between brick and wood and allowing some air flow. Washers could increase the lift a bit more. By putting them in slightly from the edge, no one would see them. You might also want to check with Bill Rigby at www.wmjrigby.com.
