My Old House Online

An online community for people who love old houses.

My husband and I are helping our son renovate a c. 1900 pyramid cottage. The construction is plank framing - no corner posts, just 2 x 12's that frame the perimeter and hold the roof up. The house has been remuddled so many times that the planks have been (I think) somewhat compromised. Has anyone out there worked with this style of framing? I'd appreciate any/all advice. You can check out the project on the ning site - http://555bstreet.ning.com/

I think I remember a thread on this over at historichomeworks. The planks attach at the sill and plate. As long as the planks are sound there and someone didn't add a ten foot picture window you might be ok. The planks can be anywhere from 7/8 to 2 inches thick. Check out Garvin's "A Building History of Northern New England," that has information about plank construction.
