My blue & salmon colored tile bathroom was built in the 1940's. For the life of me, I can't come up with anything other than white paint for the walls. It looks way too antiseptic. I'd love some ideas!

I know its been awhile since you posted this so you may have moved on but have you though of a slightly darker or lighter shade of either the salmon/ pink or blue? Sometimes by continuing the same colors it actually tones things down because there is not this huge shift to white. It is hard to truly judge the colors from the pictures but maybe a really light hydrangea blue would be nice.
Have you considered a vintage or 40s style wallpaper with both colors in the pattern?
Or go with a black/white/gray mural reminiscent of the setting from one of your favorite 40s or 40s themed movies -- perhaps a tropical Casablanca setting or go more glam with an early Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musical. It would really bring the room to life. Add a molding around the ceiling in your main tile color if you'd like.
If you want a period paper, you can probably find a vintage bathroom themed paper that would have been popular at that time - perhaps even a whimsical one with poodles and powder puffs.
You could also consider using a deeper shade of one of your colors and sponging or ragging it with a lighter shade of that and just a touch of the second tile color. The faux finish will give it a nice depth too.
Speaking of poodle wallpaper, When I was growing up I was out shopping for wallpaper for my room ( try finding yellow roses like at your Grandmothers house in the 60's) My mother found some wallpaper with pink and blue poodles with french flower carts. She asked me if I thought my younger sister would like it. I being the evil big sister said yes she would LOVE it knowing full well she would think it was hideous. My Mom bought it but did not show it to Suzy. Instead she waited and put it up while Suz was out one afternoon at a friend's house.( I may have suggested that surprising Suzy with her new wallpaper already in place was a great idea.) At any rate my sister returned home that evening to be confronted with a roomful of pink and blue and poodles everywhere. She was horrified but my mother refused to change it since she had spent the money and the time. That room had that wall paper for years but Suzy moved into my room as soon as I left for college. That wallpaper that we found would probably look very nice in a 1940's bath actually and the colors would have been a match.
