Hello! We are in the (long) process of restoring a 1930 bungalow that has 20-odd double-hung windows. My husband is repairing them himself, and since the cold weather has arrived, we are again trying…Continue

"One of the best looking at home solutions I have seen for the hole around the rope area is a thick piece of felt brown in this case and about 1/2" thick looked like they used Felt rug padding, it was cut to fit the profile of the window parts,…"

"wise words Master John. I always tell my kids they will find me one day when I'm old lying over a stonewall in the woods - putting the last stone in place."

"Very nice writeup. Pondering on my situation I recall doing the first experimental lucite insert in 1994.  Oddly many people suggested I had lost a portion or all of my ability to think, because "Everyone knows you can't do…"

"Glad to see you share your observations and your findings, which are not much different from my own, involving an infrared non-contact and a Fluke contact probe thermometers to measure what my Climate SEAL interior thermal windows were doing. I…"

"Physics is a word that frightens many, and most choose to not think about it.  Physics does say heat gives off to cold though, and since I pay for the heat I spent some time with both contact and noncontact thermometers between…"

"Interesting point I had not considered. I have yet to notice any moisture but the pockets are definitely not sealed up absolutely airtight. You are the first I've ever heard say this and I did my research before installing the insulation."

"Keep in mind that one of the reasons we have any old windows to restore is that the wood has been keep dry and decay free. Here is something we learned from sealing up hundreds of houses and thousands of windows during the 1970s energy crunches…"

"You'd have to pull off the face trim and pull out what you needed to get to the broken one and then re-foam. I'd replace all the sash-cords with new prior to doing this so the chances of the cord breaking would be pretty slim, or replace…"

"How would you replace the cord if it broke now that you sealed the weights in?"

Lynne Allison replied to Adrienne M's discussion Insulating original windows
"You have to be really careful when you do this. I did it with 1/4" rigid foam and despite checking and rechecking the fit as the window were used and the weights moved they eventually jammed up. In retrospect what I should have done was used…"

"I assume you mean around the opening for the pulley?  Foam seems a good solution for now, unless you want to put plastic window film over the window itself?  In better weather, you could pry off the side trim to access the entire length of…"

"We used the thin blue insulation in the sash cord box and stapled it to the inside wood. Then we caulked around the window frame on the inside."

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
I am a mom, pianist, piano teacher, and horn player. My old house is my hobby, though I don't spend nearly enough time working on it. I am also enjoying learning to crochet... just like my great-grandmother. Maybe it's the house?
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
We bought our 1930 house in 2000. It was rental property (think college students -- lots of them) for about 30 years. We are trying to live and work in our house while raising two kids and very slowly "rehabilitating" this old house. It needs a lot of work yet...
