"I say that this guy does not know how to work with old houses. If he is used to clients who balk at $200, then he is not used to doing the quality of work that you surely want. Getting Nice quality french doors with good hardware and high quality…"

"How would he know if it would cost too much. He doesn't know what your financial resources are. Clearly, this guy is (as my dad would put it) "talking through his hat." As you already know, what he says does not make sense. Keep…"

"I'm guessing these are new french doors in which case sometimes the hardware can be inferior or cheap. However, since he didn't even look at the hardware I'd have to say he's a dope. Find someone who knows what they're doing…"

New hardware?

I had a contractor come in to discuss hanging some exterior french doors (installed in an exterior wall which currently has no opening at all). I have had people say "don't bother, it's too big a job" as well as "no problem". This guy said no problem when we spoke on the phone but once he arrived, he stated that it would cost too much, starting with the "need to buy all new hardware which would be at least $200". He hadn't even seen the hardware that came with the doors before making this…See More

Sean Maher replied to Alice King's discussion Another Old Stove Question
"I had a stove similar to that up here in Massachusetts when I bought my house. Both the plumber and electrician saw it and were very afraid. I guess the one we had put out a ton of gas because of the heating unit on the side."

Tell us about yourself:
As an ex-NYC dweller currently living in NJ who has just within the last few years come to realize how fascinating my old tenament apartment building was, I am a relatively recent "student" of all things historic and trying to make up for lost time. Classes in historic preservation at Drew University and volunteering locally have only fueled my interest. As a full time real estate agent (yeah, I know...), I find myself absolutely astounded by how neglected and unappreciated some of the most beautiful old homes in the area have become; maybe my enthusiasm will be contagious and I can convince my buyers to appreciate the same? So my website IS one that focuses on real estate in Northern NJ, just so you know...
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
It all started with a vintage dress from the 40's. It was a stunning blue wool va-va-voom example that was just so beautifully made (and expensive when new?); details & worksmanship that you simply don't see today. What captivated me was that upon close examination, you could see that the dress had been repaired by hand over and over again along many of its seams. I began to picture this sassy woman with equisite taste who, during times of apparent hardship, had been forced to repair it over and over rather than buy a new one. Had she been rich at one point and fallen on hard times? Was her fancy dress used to meet someone who would take her out of her poverty? My imagination ran wild and my fascination for how the daily lives of people who lived in the past extended from their clothes to their homes. I find that the remains and details of the most mundane activities are some of the most fascinating; old newspapers in the walls, scribblings of children who would bee 100+ years old today, old scraps of floral linoleum from the 40's, etc.
