"The usual way, before closed cell foam, would be, from the outside in, vent chutes, 12 " fiberglass, 6mil poly vapor barrier, gypsum wall board. Be sure you have eave vents and a ridge vent. You might have to sister the rafters to get…"

Going to renavate entire Dormer Attic..

Hi, I'm new to this site, Been lurking and reading a bit here.. Mainly because i just bought a new (old house 1962) and it has a Dormer-ed roof containing 2 bedrooms and full wash room, that i plan on taking down to studs and remodeling it completely, all new pluming, electric. The main thing i am researching is how to best Insulate the ceiling while still leaving the roof sheeting vented, don't want to do a Hot Roof,  I want it to last as long as possible..  be great to hear some advice from…See More

was a auto mechanic for 7 years, and now a Building Operating Engineer for 15 years, grew up around construction my whole life, my pops was a building contractor (new homes) 40+ years....
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
just bought a house (close June 11) built in 62, it's a 2 story with 2 types of dormers on it .. don't know if it should be called a cape cod or not .. needs a lot of work but will be big usable house when finnished.....
