Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
I am so psyched. Tuesday evening after a four month slog and angst with the decision makers (who know absolutely nothing about preservation), our house an Arts&Crafts, four square with the original water tank building (30' tall and makes a great studio) was approved by the city as a Merit Resource under the city's historical preservation program. This makes us eligible for the Mill's Act which gives homeowners 40-60% of their property taxes forgiven as long as you use the money to restore and maintain the building.

I have been an old house nut for like forever - my parents use to buy and fix up old houses so I grew up working with my dad (he was a civil engineer).

I subscribed to OHJ back in the 70's - even have all the newsletter on the shelf and still consult them. I have been very lucky - owned a 1894 Queen Anne on Staten Island, had a CA Bungalow for 7 years - talk about a remuddle - bubble gum pink carpet and mini-blinds with mustard yellow trim. The windows over the mantle bookcases were behind sheetrock and 9 layers of paint on the outside glass. I should buy stock in the company that makes straight edge razor blades and holders.

While I love my house and have no desire to move I would love to help people un-muddle their homes or just advise on resources and info. So I have approached the city's historical society to start a subcommittee on preservation. Hopefully that will get approved.
