"Yep that is basically it. I figure it is less complex and cheaper to use nail polish, then put some kind of clear coat over the top of it. It all depends on your budget, what you or whoever is doing the work is comfortable with, and if the overall…"

"We have worked with conservators that mix up fine plasters, color them to match the color of the tile, apply them into the existing ceramic,  and then put a clear acrylic over the top for the shine.  It's pretty interesting to see…"

"I have seen someone replicate damaged tiles using fingernail polish of all things. It actually looked REALLY REALLY GOOD. She actually had to point out which tiles that were replicated and it was still nearly impossible to see which ones were…"

"We make them to order.  Check my web site at www.lesperancetileworks.com. Typically we need an example to follow through the glaze matching process."

"I hear what you are saying. The space between the door and the opening is only 12 to 13 inches and once the 4 inch profile casing is replaced hinged or swinging anything would be overcrowded. If anything the original brick should be cleaned and…"

"Ian a plain opening would look wrong. Covering it with a roll-up (like a roll-top desk) or hinged doors/shutters would be more appropriate. A single-hung stained/frosted glass window, exterior shutters with rounded top, a cabinet insert with doors…"

"Ian, I guess I would make it look like a built in cabinet.  I would finish each side like the room it is in only with the doors taken off.  That way it would look like it had always been there.  That's what I did in one…"

"I would give it a try, you have a double arch header so very little work is required to support the opening. The shelves and opening do not lend themselves to a built in cubby for the original era and your idea has some charm in it."

Request for Advice: Considering Creating a Pass-Through from Dining Room to Kitchen

Hey!I have a 1892 Italianate house, and am working on restoring the dining room and parlor. In the dining room, the plaster is in very rough shape and is being removed/repaired; the trim is also being removed so I can refinish it, and then it will be put back on.The door and display cabinet (with door removed) go into the kitchen. The display cabinet was actually inserted in an old exterior window. We are thinking of removing the cabinet and flowing the cabinet opening so it connects with the…See More

"  Really nice.    My approach would be to minimize the use of tile by creating a simple trimmer that followed the opening and thereby covered the damaged tile.  Some craftsman style decoration could be insinuated into the tile…"

Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
I have always loved old houses. I purchased my 1892 Italianate brick house a few years ago and have been slowly restoring it, learning as I go along, and trying not to go broke in the process. Current project is to renovate the dining room and parlor ... stripping paint off wood (what fun!), replastering, and refinishing the floors.
