White trim paint on older buildings

Absolutely agree! One of my favorite whites is "Simply White" by Benjamin Moore as it doesn't lean towards the pinks, the yellows or the greys but it still may be too bright in some situations.

Nice job Mark! Big job too, no doubt. Looks great! I introduced this topic initially refering to the historical inaccuracy of hospital white trim paint and it being a physical impossibility. Now you…

White trim paint on older buildings

I agree about high gloss paint dulling with time and so the modern use of paints with less sheen is not offensive precisely because it is not historically incorrect. Some homes would have been built…

I was specifically talking about exterior paint where the colors of natural building materials (e.g. brick, stone etc.) plus earth, trees and plantings are the "accessories" not chosen by decorators.…

Sounds interesting Brian. How long has this paint held up? I assume you use an alkyd primer?

It is no bother, ..but in the search for a better oil paint, (or in the lack-thereof,) I've experimented with different 'ad-mixtures' to come up with what I call my "Tom Sawyer Paint." I take 1/2 linseed oil and mix it using a pallet knife & 'Morta-…

remember that color changes with the sunlight - winter sun makes things a different color than summer sun. The angle of the sun matters too: New England white Federal houses sit at a different latitude than those in Maryland or Georgia. The bright c…

I agree that an off white is a little easier on the eye. We just completed renovating a ca 1795 Federal in Massachusetts. Painted the (original and newly restored) sash and shutters black, got black storm windows, and painted it an off white. Excuse…

Just a comment. I dont know about historical accuracy but I personally dislike what I call "aspirin white." It almost always looks terrible and when used on trim on a nicely painted house it looks jarring.

That's funny because I'm having cornerboards installed and they are going to be painted HD's Ultra Pure White. All the interior trim, doors included, are painted that color in a satin finish and the exterior is next on my hit list. According to a de…

This is an interesting observation that whites would not have stayed pure. Probably even a greater issue is that oil paints are high gloss, esp. then. They would have dulled down some over time, and faded if colorful, but would have been much glossi…

I agree with you. There are over 800 different "off white" colors. When I bought my house it was painted appliance white. It looked cold and uninviting. Not to mention the fact it always looked dirty. I can't tell you how many times I hosed down the…

As historically trim paint was made with linseed oil it must have very quickly mellowed to pale cream. Does it bother anyone else that so many old houses are painted with a harsh white especially when historical accuracy is aimed for? Perhaps the fa…
