Jayne replied to Paula Ursoy's discussion Looking for "Dutch Doors" WANTED
"They were on my house (an 1887 Queen Anne cottage) when I bought it, unfortunately. Did you try googling architectural salvage places in your area? Or asking at antique shops? Sometimes they have architectural salvage in their basement or back room."

"I don't know what it is, but I'll ask my ex next time I see him. He's a genius about old house architecture. In the meantime, if it were me I wouldn't be able to resist cutting a hole in the drywall to see what's there. Can…"

Jayne replied to Paula Ursoy's discussion Looking for "Dutch Doors" WANTED
"I have Mr. Ed doors on my kitchen and my bathroom. Yes, bathroom! They're craptastic 1970s vintage though (hollow-core) and I live in Missouri. Good luck in your search."

Jayne replied to Nancy's discussion Historic Home Plaques -- yes/no?
"I live in a National Register Historic District and I wish our local Historic Preservation Commission would issue plaques like the ones you're talking about. I first saw them in the historic neighborhoods of Savannah, Ga. and, as Jane pointed…"

Jayne replied to nick's discussion What is this?
"I'll be interested in the answer to this, too, as I've seen outlets like this in old houses and often wondered what they are. (Sorry I couldn't be any help.)"

Jayne commented on Nick Wylie's blog post Good News great find
"That's wonderful! Very thoughtful of them to leave that with the house. And by the way, popcorn's not hard to remove--spray it with hot water and what doesn't fall right off can be scraped off with a big putty knife. :)"

Jayne replied to Vinnie Vinson's discussion Pest control...
"I agree with Lair about the mothballs. Another thing that works is to put steel wool in any holes or gaps. I guess the mice don't like to chew through it and it seems to keep them from getting in. Good luck."

Jayne replied to Nancy's discussion new here...can anyone identify style of/put a date on my old house?
"Phil, the shingles are individually installed, yes, and sometimes in patterns. I'm not sure what they're made of. One of my neighbors, who's quite knowledgeable about architecture, first told me that's what that type of shingling…"

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
I am restoring a Folk Victorian in the Old Neighborhoods National Register Historic District of Lexington, Missouri. Lexington has four National Register Historic Districts, more pre-Civil War houses than any other town in Missouri, and is the location of the Civil War Battle of the Hemp Bales. My great-great grandfather fought in that battle for the Confederate States Army. He later built the chapel at the Confederate Soldiers' Home (now the Confederate Park State Historic Site) in Higginsville, Missouri. My family has made their home in Lafayette County, Missouri for five generations.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
I have been fascinated with old houses and architecture since I was a child and have always wanted to own a historic home. In 2006 I was finally able to purchase my dream home, a Folk Victorian known as the James Crawford Kelly House. The house suffered from a horrid remuddling--cedar shake shingle siding covering the original clapboards--from about 1971 until the summer of 2008, when in a two-month slog of hard work, I tore them off. Recently, a neighbor gave me a photo of my house as it appeared in 1906 (my profile photo) and it's my dream to restore the house to that appearance as much as is possible.

Jayne, your house is a beautiful folk-Victorian style home - the windows in the facade and the spandrel are gorgeous!!. Taking off the shingles is making a huge difference. The idea of hauling out the old plaster should be given some thought...my problem was that a major percentage of the plaster had failed and some horrendous renos in the past had destroyed much lath. I decided to conserve what I could (kitchen and dining room and a number of other areas) and where the lath was too far gone, I did go for drywall (I'm not in the snack bracket to hire plasterer/lathers for what we call a class 5 finish!) I have always thought that one should make the best decision you can, knowing what you do, researching as much as possible and with respecting the past history and the future caretakers of your home, and then go for it.
All the best,
Morgan
