Tiny Guest House Adds Livability to Historic Home

Historic homes have plenty of charm and character, but are often short on space. This is especially true when company comes to town. Ybor City resident Judy Greer has found an affordable solution to that problem: she is installing a guest cottage behind her home. Designed and built by Historic Shed, a Brooksville-based outbuilding specialty company, the cottage complements her historic home and adds to the neighborhood character. The cottage has a bedroom and full bath, and is roughly the size…See More

Pecky Cypress & Shellac

We recently completed a project for a great Historic Shed customer who had saved a variety of cypress boards that she wanted incorporated in her new home office shed. We used the wide cypress planks to build the desk and shelves, and installed the random width pecky cypress on the ceiling of the 12'x14' shed. Pecky cypress is created when a tree is attacked by fungus, resulting in lens-shaped pockets throughout the wood. Studies have not…See More

How to Camouflage Inappropriate Replacement Windows on Your Historic Home

A recent forum post on an old house restoration and renovation website asked what they could do to hide the bright white vinyl replacement windows that the previous owners had installed. They didn't have the money to replace the windows, and the windows were still working fine, but were glaringly inappropriate for their historic home. For situations like this, an affordable solution is to install traditional wood window screens over the windows.…See More

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
I am a historic preservation consultant with 13 years experience renovating historic buildings in Florida. Our parent company, Preservation Resource, Inc. recently launched a product line designed specifically for historic Florida homes that includes outbuildings, sheds, garages, screen doors, wood window screens and more at HistoricShed.com.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
Our biggest project to date involves the relocation of 62 historic buildings in the Ybor City National Historic Landmark district in Tampa. The homes were in the way of improvements to Interstate-4, so were relocated by Federal Highways and FL DOT. 27 of the homes were rehabilitated after relocation and sold through the City of Tampa Housing Department. Six buildings were converted to commercial use then transferred to local non-profit organizations. The remaining 29 buildings are being relocated, then sold to parties with the provision that they be rehabilitated within a certain time frame.
