Sue Ellen Kling replied to Joan Harding's discussion Info wanted on Quarker brand kerosene whole house stoves
"Joan, sure. No problem (although I'm not a technical expert, that's for sure). Actually the big kerosene whole-house units are very safe. On extremely cold and windy days I used to sit right up against the heater and enjoy the warmth on my…"

Sue Ellen Kling replied to Joan Harding's discussion Info wanted on Quarker brand kerosene whole house stoves
"Joan, you have a great find! My first home, a 1950 4-room summer cottager, had a heater quite similar to your as the only source of heat. It actually worked quite well unless the wind was blowing strongly outside (and that was due more to the lack…"

Joan Harding replied to Vinnie Vinson's discussion Pest control...
"The problem with poisons and such is that the animals can die in unforeseen places that may create bigger problems in the long run. I do have good luck with my cats. At the very least they manage to get the dumb mice and let me know I have a problem…"

Joan Harding replied to Joe King's discussion Interior trim: New coat of paint over existing chipped paint?
"The only thing that I might suggest is that after you spot sand and feather you spot paint those areas to bring the paint up even with the surrounding trim and then paint the whole thing. It seems to give a smoother finish. But really our houses are…"

"Speaking of poodle wallpaper, When I was growing up I was out shopping for wallpaper for my room ( try finding yellow roses like at your Grandmothers house in the 60's) My mother found some wallpaper with pink and blue poodles with french…"

Joan Harding replied to Elizabeth Hedstrom's discussion lead dust after renovation?
"I agree that you should have the kids lead levels checked if only to establish their base line for any follow up tests. I recommend to not try to sweep too much. Do the house in sections or room by room. Chose an area and seal it off from the rest…"

"I know its been awhile since you posted this so you may have moved on but have you though of a slightly darker or lighter shade of either the salmon/ pink or blue? Sometimes by continuing the same colors it actually tones things down because there…"

I live in and have been restoring a 1910 german clapboard american four square for the last 20 years. I can truly say as to old houses that if you have the time you don't have the money and vice versa. But I love it and think that quality of materials and the quirks of and old house are great. I am also on the local Board of Architectural Reveiw
