Kitchen Restoration - Phase 1

Not finished yet - the curtains and chairs still aren't done & a few more cabinet doors need a last coat of paint (hopefully done very soon). The floors & sink aren't getting tackled for several more months and the major restoration stuff is still…

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
I'm a special ed teacher by day and bat-fighter, slug-killer, floor pryer-upper & refinisher, plasterer, disaster averterer, painter, carpenter, landscaper, designer, entertainer, plumber, electrician, hardware store stalker, maid, and determined historic home restorer by night. The house of my dreams and my address are finally one and the same. What an incredible thing. I love my house and can't wait until others finally see in it what I do - extraordinary beauty, history, and hundreds more years of stories waiting to be told.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
My first (previous) house was 950 square feet and I loved every second of restoration & renovation. I got my feet wet and tasted how amazing it felt to stand back and watch others see what you knew was there all along. Now, I have the house of my dreams and there is over 3,000 square feet of gorgeousness waiting for me to unearth it. Some of it is buried pretty deep. Underneath layers of carpet, linoleum, subfloors, varnish, paint, god-awful remodeling jobs, wall to wall mirrors, plaster disasters, and, oh, don't forget... bat poop. Gotta love the bats who absolutely refuse to move out of my house. It's okay. I wear a helmet with a face shield any time I go in my basement or attic. I've worked up to just the helmet - it was a full Carharts suit (in pink), knee-high rubber boots (hot pink), leather work gloves, a sweatshirt with a hood, and a hot pink umbrella, in addition to the helmet. I'm getting braver each day. :)

I'm attempting to complete this amazing home's restoration on my own with my dad's expertise and slave labor when he has a free weekend and mom's decorating touch once I finally get to that point in each room. Right now, I'm living out of the dining room and working my way room-by-room through the house and moving in as I finish a room (I'm waiting for that first "finish" still). It's been quite an adventure so far, but I know it will be worth it in the end. I've given myself a 30-year time-line. :)

Good Luck Jodi! My house has old Boiler/Radiator heat. We looked into having central air installed in my house and our cheapest estimate was $15,500! We'll be waiting a few years for that to happen I think!
