Our 1885 Stick Victorian has a beautiful turret complete with huge curved wavy leaded glass windows.  The glass is in great shape, the windows themselves look good.  But there is little to no glazing…Continue

Please help me identify this big beautiful lady.  She is hand painted with quite a bit of crazing on the china.  Arms are brass, similar to what is on my gas lamp in my 1885 Victorian house. It is…Continue

Lifting perfectly good wood floor to find more decorative wood floor underneath

So on our 1885 Victorian, some side rooms have very narrow wood floors, often laid in a decorative pattern. In the middle or main rooms of the house, the wood floor is typical tongue and groove.   A…Continue

Fireplace in 1885 Stick Victorian

What say you about this gas fireplace in the entry room?  Tilework is nice, wooden box around it seems flimsy and not old enough to be original...For context, there is a newspaper article from 1910…Continue

How to Restore Curved Turret Windows

Our 1885 Stick Victorian has a beautiful turret complete with huge curved wavy leaded glass windows.  The glass is in great shape, the windows themselves look good.  But there is little to no glazing left on the windows, sash cords rotted out, and many many layers of paint.  I will have to strip enough paint to get the windows to move and replace sash cords.  I think I can handle all of that.  But I am not sure how to get the exterior windows out without losing the glass since there is very…See More

"I have to be honest, I don't think it's that old. Looks very 1970's to me. As far as belonging in a Victorian or a Colonial Revival, I'd have to say neither. If you like it, by all means keep it, but it doesn't look period…"

Please help me identify beautiful hand painted chandelier.

Please help me identify this big beautiful lady.  She is hand painted with quite a bit of crazing on the china.  Arms are brass, similar to what is on my gas lamp in my 1885 Victorian house. It is very large, probably extends down 2 feet.  What time/ style does this evoke?  Would this go better in the 1885 Victorian or a 1910 Neo Colonial Revival?See More

"I think that walnut and cherry are possibilities for the darker wood. Remember that the parquet is typically very thin, likely less than 3/8" thick, so be careful to be very conservative in sanding it down for refinishing.  "
