So on our 1885 Victorian, some side rooms have very narrow wood floors, often laid in a decorative pattern. In the middle or main rooms of the house, the wood floor is typical tongue and groove.   A…Continue

How to Paint Over Glossy Trim Paint

All of the original trim in our 1885 Stick Victorian is intact, but painted.  It is painted with that old kind of oil based paint that had a really high gloss, almost enamel, finish.  I like the look of it and want to give it a fresh coat of white. I can see that someone has tried to paint over it in one room with water based paint that didn't adhere well and peels right off.Two questions:1. How do I prepare and paint it so that the paint will stick this time?2. What kind of paint will give a…See More

How to Restore Curved Turret Windows

Our 1885 Stick Victorian has a beautiful turret complete with huge curved wavy leaded glass windows.  The glass is in great shape, the windows themselves look good.  But there is little to no glazing left on the windows, sash cords rotted out, and many many layers of paint.  I will have to strip enough paint to get the windows to move and replace sash cords.  I think I can handle all of that.  But I am not sure how to get the exterior windows out without losing the glass since there is very…See More

Hi Karody, I live in Belleville and we chatted in the forums a few months back about window shutters. I was hoping to chat with you again as I would love to hear your thoughts on painting contractors in Salina. We can't find anybody in our area to paint our rather difficult and tall Victorian. But I have no knowledge of who's good in Salina. Would love to hear back. Thanks!
