I have come across a '50s (probably) vintage stove that appears to be in very good shape and in working order. I will post photos and the brand/model info. If anyone is looking for this vintage…Continue

Looking for Info on a Type of Kitchen Window

I have this really cool window in my kitchen that someone told me was a "B G" window. I have done web searches on several versions of this: B.G., Begee, Beegee, Bee Gee, to no avail. Has anyone here…Continue

An Unintentionally French Country Kitchen

I have never had a kitchen that I designed to fit my own cooking style until now. While so many people are taking down walls to create an open design, I was very happy with my kitchen partitioned off from the rest of the first floor.I love to cook, but if I am sitting at my dining table, I don't want to see the carnage…See More

Tell us about yourself:
In the process of renovating a 1924 American Four-Square with a 1930's brick storefront attached. This is my third renovation.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
I have done two previous renovations - a teens-era bungalow "Sears & Roebuck House" and a 1927 car dealership designed by E.B. Green. I hope that the house I just bought - a Four-Square - is my final restoration! I love bringing these old buildings back to spit shine and polish, but the biggest reward is sitting back and enjoying the results. I am blogging my current project. www.soulhitchhiker.com/blog

Open Floorplan: Arts & Crafts Style

The first time I walked through the first floor of my house, it struck me that the house was built in 1924, yet the first floor had a beautiful flow to it, and an open floorplan. The kitchen is separated from the rest of the rooms by a swinging door and a half-stairwell that leads to the basement and the backyard. This was fine with me - I'm not crazy about the contemporary floorplans that slam the kitchen right in the middle of the 'living space'. I don't really want my dirty dishes, and…

Finally a Creative Space: My Music Room

The reason I bought this house to begin with was two-fold. I fell in love with the woodwork and leaded glass windows, but the house also has a 700 square foot, boarded up storefront that I eventually want to restore and divide it into two spaces - a first floor bathroom and laundry, and a large music room and performance space. I won't be working on the storefront for a while, so I turned the third bedroom on the second floor of the house into an office/music room so that I have a place to…

Now Taking Reservations: A Guest Room without the Blues...

When I first looked at this house, the previous owners made some, errrr... interesting choices, but probably the most memorable was the gawdawful royal blue paint on the walls in one of the bedrooms. It was so awful, the room actually felt as if it were vibrating. To make matters worse, there were these long, Frankenstein-looking plaster repairs on every wall.…
