"Less work is always a good thing!  Thought for some reason you already owned the leaky roof place?  Good thing you didn't.   Best with the new spread!  "

KenK replied to Phil's discussion Tankless or other hot water heater experiences
"Thanks for the info.  There is a joke in there somewhere with regards to Bush and toilet technology.... :)  As per high tech - I think they next step will be digital technology which adaptive and conforming bowl shapes which accommodate…"

KenK replied to Phil's discussion Tankless or other hot water heater experiences
"I was looking at tankless for a while - didn't like the fact I had to put a new hole in the side of the gas, plus the $$$$ to buy and install. The dependability of some units (Bosch/Rinnai) didn't seem to be there so I bagged the idea.…"

KenK replied to KYLE HEYMAN's discussion Sealing bricks?
"Our stone mason repointed the chimney and sealed the bricks with some Thomsons water seal. He said that it was a good idea to use water seal on the bricks. That said - the repointing of the entire chimney, flashing was probably the key to stopping…"

KenK replied to PStewart's discussion What will you do about compact fluorescent lights?
"I was on Ebay and I just found out you can buy the real thing for a few bucks more!  Some dating back to 1904!   That said - the light from these bulbs is not the best. Cool though.  "

KenK replied to PStewart's discussion What will you do about compact fluorescent lights?
"I used to study under fluorescents lights in college UC Beserkely/Davis/Santa Cruz and others. The buzz, the ugly yellow lighting made me go bonkers after a while. The new coatings and improvements in fluorescent ballasts over the past 20 years has…"

KenK replied to PStewart's discussion What will you do about compact fluorescent lights?
"90% of the home is lit with fluorescent. That 90% is hidden by some type of lamp shade, cover etc.  The fixtures which are bare bulb are incandescent.  In ornate fixtures I am using some of the retro Edison-Mazda 'type' lamps.…"

KenK replied to Jim Finley's discussion Ever encounter old house snobbery?
"Cheers Jim!  Darn CT pricing!!!   I was thinking if I had to shell out that much I would install solar for partial heating and convert my gym bicycle into some type of generating system. :)  "

KenK replied to Jim Finley's discussion Ever encounter old house snobbery?
"Whoa! $270. Is your home heat partially supplemented by water from the electric boiler?  I wonder if a hybrid electric water tank could be useful???  I used to live on the West Coast. Most of the homes (especially San Francisco)…"

KenK replied to Jim Finley's discussion How do you deal with ice dams in your gutters?
"Thanks Dennis for the heads-up!!!  Very scary to know that professionals nearly burned a mansion down.  :(  I will not be using a propane weed killer to remove ice unless it's on my driveway.   I think the option of calling…"

KenK replied to Jim Finley's discussion How do you deal with ice dams in your gutters?
"After the nasty snow in late 2010/2011 a lot of the stores this fall started selling those electric gutter/roof heaters. They were everywhere and I had never seen them prior. I have no idea if they work well?  …"

KenK replied to Jim Finley's discussion Ever encounter old house snobbery?
"Snobs have too much time and money on their hands.  At the end of the day - I am often too busy working on the old house to care.  "

KenK replied to Amanda Stroud's discussion Historic Chair
"It's not a truly old office chair. I would say circa 80's?    I would imagine that the inserts in the wood back attach to a detachable plastic shell which latched onto a upholstered & disposable seat and back rest.  Some…"

thanks Ken! the kitties (boy and girl) are faux-Siamese, as our house is faux-Victorian (or something) -- but that's what I'm here to find out more about! (authenticity)
looking forward to seeing pix of your old home!
