"I found a 1926 American Standard wall-mount sink on eBay, which matches the upstairs bathroom fixtures in my 1892 home. A previous owner had replaced the sink with a cheap vanity, but never patched up the wall where the sink was mounted so I knew…"
"By the way.... all of our wallpaper was also painted over. After we scrape away the painted wallpaper, we plan to use this wagner wall steamer to get the rest of the wallpaper off. I will let you know how that works :) Good luck with your resto as…"
"Thanks for the nice comment. I think you are right about it being a free classic queen anne. It does have 2 cross gables (one side has bay windows, as well as the front, while the other side is just square). I do see a lot of colonial revival…"
"Hi! Your house is beautiful-I would call it a Queen Anne. Looking at its form, it appears to have a hipped roof with lower cross gables, typical of Queen Anne homes. I want to classify this as an example of a subtype of the Queen Anne style known as…"
I work in Historic Preservation and I research historic homes and cemeteries.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
After years of dreaming about it, I just bought an old home in Lowell built in 1892. I have been working on updating the mechanicals and restoring the beauty of the period details. I have been frustrated (who paints over layers of wallpaper, really?) and amazed (beautiful wood trim under two drop ceilings!) at what I have found. But I enjoy every minute of the experience.
Thanks for the nice comment. I think you are right about it being a free classic queen anne. It does have 2 cross gables (one side has bay windows, as well as the front, while the other side is just square). I do see a lot of colonial revival details in the house, and also with the 2 houses next door to me (which are SUPER NICE on the inside). Both porches did have nice columns on them until prob the 1960s. You can still see their outline in the paint. I do plan on putting them back in the near future. I have not been able to find the exact build date, but I know it was there in 1900... and not there in 1895... so I would say somewhere in between would be accurate. Keep checking in, I am doing all kinds of work to this thing :)
By the way.... all of our wallpaper was also painted over. After we scrape away the painted wallpaper, we plan to use this wagner wall steamer to get the rest of the wallpaper off. I will let you know how that works :) Good luck with your resto as well! I can't wait to see pictures.
