"Your thinking is correct that 3/8 is too thin for a wooden shingle but what you are forgetting is wooden shingles are cut on a taper.  Thick at the bottom(1/2" to 5/8") and taper up to the top with less than a quarter inch…"

Lair Tienter replied to Craig Flaming's discussion What age / style / builder is our house?
"My vote is for Carpenter Gothic.  I would have loved to see it when both porches were original with all the gingerbread on them.  The two matching sides with the peak in the center tieing it all together.  great house, you are lucky…"

"I certainly looks like it was built long before 1954.  Iwould say teens of twentys but it is just a guess.  My guess would be there have been a few alterations over the years, additions and enclosures. Just a guess but like Phil said…"

Lair Tienter replied to PStewart's discussion Shellac over apple green paint? Historical finish?
"It sounds to me like you are discribing a process called "antiqueing" It is where you paint a translucent finish over paint to give the color more depth and patina.  It is the same process you use when you do faux woodgraining. …"

Masonry stripper, has anyone used any?

Yesterday I went out to repair a couple spots on my painted brick. I used a scraper on the edges. No need for that, I could take a piece and pull and it came off like vinyl wallpaper. Big pieces of several square feet. All 5 layers right down to the dusty first layer. I tried it in 3 places with the same results. As a result I have a very ugly wall and a dilemma. Should I scrape it all off and repaint or strip. I did a lot of stripping back in the late 80's and have the scars to prove it using… Continue

Is Anyone watching over this site??????

Every day I come on line and there is a new member who does not know enough about America to enter his address correctly. The next line is about a blog selling one thing or another not of interest to anyone who loves old houses. I am able to ignore these people but what I am concern about is their access to my personal profile. In the last week I have started getting spam from numerous places. I have been very careful since I lost my last computer to a virus from spam. I have another computer… Continue

Painted Brick Homes

I have seen a lot of discussion on this site about painted brick homes. I have been around old homes a long time and remember something very few of you know or remember. When('60's) I purchased my first home (soft brick) at closing I was given a paper. This paper gave instruction for the care of your brick home. It was much like the papers you get now days on the dangers of lead based paint. The theory back in the 50's and 60's was soft brick needed protection from the elements. It suggested… Continue

Thank you so much for your welcome! I will be looking for expertise, comments , advice and camradarie. I'm a bit slow with the computer, so bear with me. One of my first projects will also be a porch, but with a somewhat different set of problems from your own. Pictures will follow soon. We had only begun on the house. I will try my very best to continue the work, knowing that houses are never really finished, nor should they be.

Hi! Your house is gorgeous! I just started getting this magazine and they happened to send two back issues so I saw your article. Congratulations! I may have to take a road trip sometime just to see it up close.

as long as you are using an oil-based tint and varnish, I assume you can get the tint from anywhere- couldn't you use an oil-based tint from an artist's store?

Lair -

Thanks for your very nice commments about our work on the house in Oswego, NY. Its always nice to know that someone takes notice! The project is probably about as big as I imagined ---- what I did not imagine was how I would lose some of the energy I had when I started. I still work on the house every week --- but it used to be everyday. I just found myself getting tired and there is a long way to go. I finally hired a carpenter to help out...simply because of the volume of work. You can only run so many miles of baseboard in every room (replicating the originals) before you say "I'd like some help with this." Its just a long haul. Im excited though, that this Christmas, I expect the entryway to be finished and the parlor as well!!!

As you know I really love your house. And I love the mouldings on teh inside especially. That turn-of-the-century grillwork that divides those two main rooms is amazing. And like our house, yours has those "totem style" mouldings where there is a rosette for where a chair rail meets teh casing. My favorite kind!
