Marlin Schorr replied to Craig Flaming's discussion What age / style / builder is our house?
"From the details I can spot, I'd say it would be closer to 1850-1860...and while it MAY be Italianate in the listing, you have Gothic details in the bargeboard.  Your house might have been in the country then, but Route 40 was THE major…"

Marlin Schorr replied to Grant Gustavsen's discussion fireplace question
"Definitely flue pipe openings--my 1908 house's two chimneys have them, one in the kitchen and one in the bath directly above...and one in the master bedroom chimney breast (no fireplace there).  My fireplace in the parlor shares the…"

Marlin Schorr replied to LindanEddie Jones's discussion Who knows the style of this home?
"I'd have to guess that your addition with the triple windows upstairs, and the flat-roofed section are from the mid 50s, the rest of the house could be as early as 1915 or so.  I'd say not much older because the proportions of the…"

Marlin Schorr replied to M. P.'s discussion Can I find an ironing board?
"If you haunt salvage stores or antique shops, you may find one--but for the price of Rockler's $200 one, you could easily make one yourself--you can find hinges to mount it at any hardware or big box store, and you can make the board itself…"

Marlin Schorr replied to Jessie Kaufman's discussion More photos of our old house
"I would have to say that you should think long and hard about throwing out that kitchen cabinetry...as others have said, original is very scarce, and you would pay a LOT to replicate the look in a new space when you might be able to re-use what you…"

Marlin Schorr replied to SarahC's discussion Help: What type of house do I have?
"I'd go with Foursquare colonial...the porch has been altered at some point I think, so it's faux spanish style is throuwing you off. That stair is definitely colonial influenced."

Marlin Schorr replied to tinkersouthernbelle's discussion What is the style of this 1920 home in TN???
"Tinker, I agree that the block additions need to come off, but as for doing a total gut and rebuild of the interior is a mistake.  Yes, redo the plumbing and electrical--but you really don't know what is original with the rest of the…"

"I would love to see details of the transom operator you have on this door.... Thx for posting the pic, and the kitty just add to it!  :)"

Marlin Schorr commented on Anthony Marstall's blog post Historic Pendleton Heights Virtual Tour
"Some very nice houses there--but a pity that some were ruined with the addition/alteration of original porch railings with modern materials and heights.  If the area is a historic district, someone was sleeping on the job by not covering that…"

Marlin Schorr replied to Jim Finley's discussion Share your old houses' hidden treasures and artifacts
"When I moved into my 1908 foursquare back in '87, I was lucky enough to have the original woodwork, original electric lighting and bath fixtures.  The attic yielded among other things, some miscellaneous curtain rods, a Fenton pale pink…"

Marlin Schorr replied to PStewart's discussion What will you do about compact fluorescent lights?
"I agree with Bill; I have only two CFs so far, one in the newel light on my stairs, the other in an opaque shade in the kitchen--my other lights are open so I use clear edison-style bulbs in them.  My parlor and dining room fixtures have a…"

Marlin Schorr replied to Nick's discussion Arts and Crafts or Mission style radios?
"In my bedroom, I have a Zenith 7H820 from 1948, like the one in 'War of The Worlds'...works fine in my private space; in the main part of the house, which is decorated @ 1908 style, I have a console victrola from around 1912, and a console…"

Marlin Schorr replied to Jessica Lemmon's discussion Trying to identify existing light fixture - possibly Delft?
"I'm nearly 100% sure I saw one very similar to this on Antiques Roadshow a couple months ago...it dated from the '50s as I recall.  It isn't real Delft, but rather imitation."

Marlin Schorr replied to Adrienne M's discussion Insulating original windows
"I assume you mean around the opening for the pulley?  Foam seems a good solution for now, unless you want to put plastic window film over the window itself?  In better weather, you could pry off the side trim to access the entire length of…"

Tell us about yourself:
History and design fan, always liked old houses, and now own one! Also like siamese cats!
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
Own and working on a 1908 'foursquare' with a mix of Greek and Tuscan revival elements. I have done the interior in period decor, and kept everything as close to original as possible in my restoration. I don't need every gadget or 'convenience' which comes along, so my kitchen and baths also fit closely into my home's era.
