"You're right - Great Lakes geology is very distinctive. Thanks for noticing. You did a great job on your porch restoration, and I can totally identify with your comment about fear of collapse when the movers were on the porch. Keep up the…"

"My designs included certain man-made materials - stone veneer for piers, decking, hidden structural steel, some trim pieces - because of the severity of winters in Northern Michigan, and because these elements could be subject to deferred…"

Michael Cunningham replied to Martin's discussion Anyone have good success with a paint sprayer?
"You are right on, John, We've also painted houses for many years and been ridiculed more than once by neighbors who sprayed their coatings and completed the work in a matter of days, when it took us an entire season to brush our houses…"

"Your photos are great and I like the one with you on the roof. I look at the dirtiness of restoration in this way - we are taking the hit for all the crummy, dangerous, unromantic work - lead paint, asbestos, PCBs - all the usual suspects, so our…"

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
We have been restoring old homes and public buildings for many years. Anyone who has personally restored one knows that the only motivation that works - is love of old architecture.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
The Dr. Irving Gould home (1907) and the Dr. Willis Chapman home (1896) are now in the final stages of restoration. Our dream is to be able to totally restore the William and Phoebe Martin home (1888), which once had a beautiful curved porch. Having just completed restoring the porch for the Chapman home, we dream of accomplishing the same for the Martin home, but we know it will not come easy or inexpensive.

Are these mostly homes you have lived in or friends houses too? Either way, they're wonderful, and the door was worth the effort!

post-retirement restoration project? Sounds like us! My poor husband Joe has it in his head that after this one we will buy one closer to oh & ma, where we are from...we are thinking nc or upstate ny...and that will be it. He realizes more and more each day that I will never stop pining over the worst of the worst...can't help it! Good Luck with your dreams!

Thanks for wanting to be my first friend!.... Dirty, very dirty. At this stage in life I only have two types of clothes, paint splattered holey work clothes and church clothes. My day job is as an upholsterer, (I have my own shop) which is just dirty all day too. I am going back and forth on posting this really unflattering photo of myself on a roof in ohio wearing a white plastic suit (we were installing insulation earlier) that is all swelled up with winter wind. I look awful, but it is very funny and I think everyone on here would understand!

I never noticed how all of our old houses in Michigan have that lovely granite stonework, until I moved to Iowa, then Indiana, then Illinois...now every time I go back to my home state I see that type of stone everywhere.
My mom's old farmhouse had the granite stonework for the chimney, and the huge three-storey barn had the whole foundation plus two very large ramps to the second floor in the back made from those stones, with light *pink* masonry.
