"Mind your sense of Humor???? If we didn't have a good healthy sense of humor we have no business owning an old home. You go girl!!!  Lair"

"Great story.  Andy is right, people are very nice in this forum.  We can get a  little punchy when someone asks about replacement windows or tearing out a rear stairway, but it is all in the spirit of preservation."

"Don't mind at all, Sandi.  In fact, it's a breath of fresh air sometimes when you've been perusing various forums filled with sometimes-very-rude-people (Not this one...everyone is quite polite and close-knit here).  As for…"

"Ah, I know those little square accesses from the house I grew up in!   The Realtor said the attic of my house was insulated.  Yet, no access?  Methinks things were a little 'mucky'!  How does one insulate an…"

Phil replied to Sandi Romijn's discussion 1885 Victorian Farmhouse - No attic access??
"Thanks. If your house is totally uninsulated in the attic, then I actually think that it will make a big difference to insulate it.  Only the tower attic had no insulation, which is probably 10% or less of the total attic square footage. Also,…"

Sandi Romijn replied to ErikErik's discussion Wood Wall Paneling
"Unfortunately, the house I bought was 'updated' throughout with wood paneling, then someone painted it all white.  I'm retired now and unable to perform the necessary renovations.  I'm just thankful that, cosmetically,…"

"If you check out stained glass on eBay, you will find artisans who  create new stained glass windows.  You may be able to contact one of them to cut a piece for you for a very reasonable price."

"What a neat house you have!!  Thanks for your reply.  I'm glad you finally got into your attic--Too bad there was no treasure up there!!  I sure hope I can find a way to install a drop down ladder in mine.  I'd sure…"

"I live in PA in an 1895 house, and it originally did not have attic access either.  I found out from someone who bought it in 1976 that it was enclosed then.  He cut a whole in a closet on our 3rd floor into the attic over the rear T of…"

1885 Victorian Farmhouse - No attic access??

I've very much enjoyed reading about all the endeavors here with these old homes.  I owned an old Victorian in PA about 20 years ago that was built in the mid 1700's that I just loved.  Unfortunately, life moved me and I had to give it up. I just bought this Victorian farm house several months ago.  I've run…See More

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself:
Retired with multi-hobbies, shortly relocating to another state into a small 2-story 1880's farm style house. I've owned an old house years ago, but this one presents some problems in restoration which will necessitate undoing some remodeling.

Wish I could just hit a "delete" key!! ; Until I can find one of those, I've considered this to be a great place to come for advice and ideas. :)
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
I owned an old house in PA about 30 years ago. It was, at that time, over 200 years old and, all in all, in pretty good shape. My then husband and I replaced two porches, restoring the front to original and the back beautifully, with local stone. A very nice home, and well kept up for its 200+ yrs. Wish I had it today.

I hope to be able to make some restorations to an old Farmhouse style home in WV.
