Will Stanton replied to Jeff & Sue Ellen Smith's discussion Unusual floor joists
"I believe that the original floor was a wet bead tile floor on top of the 1x6's, in between the joists-that is why they are tapered. Someone tore that out and installed the plywood and then a new tile floor on top. Will"

Will Stanton replied to Jennifer D.'s discussion Sagging floors in 140 year old home
"Yes, hire an experienced contractor or engineer to evaluate not only the foundation but also all the structural elements of the house. "Sagging" floors on the second fl. could be caused by problems with the foundation and/or the girders,…"

Will Stanton replied to psychochix's discussion Removing tongue & groove flooring
"Depends on the type of nails used whether you can "pry" much at all. Best to use a Sawzall with a metal cutting blade and cut the nails on a section of 3 or 4 boards after "gently" prying them, rather than one by one. Will"

Contractor Follies

I was working this summer on a old house- building two new baths and renovating the existing one. It was Friday and the homeowners were away on vacation. My plasterer commented that the powder room toilet was "hot". Sure enough, when I felt the tank and bowl they were both hot! so I went down to the basement and checked the piping and sure enough, the Plumber's assistant had run the toilet supply line to the hot! instead of the cold. So I called my Plumber and he came right over and corrected…See More

Will Stanton replied to David Harris's discussion Repairing wood clapboards
"David: DAP still makes "Painter's Putty" similar to Glazing Putty, I think that would work better and be easier and quicker to apply than caulk. The problem with a glue/sawdust mixture is that is does not flex with the wood. Will"

Will Stanton replied to Janice Hamby's discussion Old "guillotine" windows
"Yes, see my website at: www.oldhousecarpentry.com. These tilt jambliners are unobtrusive and bring your existing windows into the 21st Century. To those who object to the jambliners I say- did you restore the outhouse in your old house or add a…"

My Wife and I completely renovated an old Colonial in Maine in the 1980's, where.our son was born. We moved back to PA in 1991 and have owned two different houses where we have done mainly cosmetic repairs as well as structural- windows, doors, exterior stairs, etc. This summer, with the help of our, now 20 year old son, we built a Garage in our back yard for my business as well as repairs to our current house. Save your Windows

Old windows are problematic, they look right but often they don't work right. However. while replacement windows may work well, vinyl ones look quite out of place on an old house, and attractive new wooden sashes are expensive!!

Rather than "fix" the old sash weight/pulley system I replace them with vinyl jambliners which make the sash slide easily, stay open in any position, and allows both sash to tilt for easy cleaning and maintenance. This preserves the original windows and maintains… Continue
