Since I have gotten some really great info on first two questions, here's a third. What is this? Dumwaiter shaft, drywell or what. It goes approx 6-8 feet lower than basement floor and has small door…

It would be helpful if you would send a photo of them. I have seen some mighty ugly old, origanal ceiling fixtures. If you wish to be a stickler for detail, clean them up, get some interesting globes (they make cool Edison Copys) and get a dimmer.…

Those are great! Definitely original. I agree that they look medieval, which is fun. And yes I think arts & crafts when I see the hammered look. I could be wrong here but I know another similar house w/ original lighting and they have round bulbs. I…

There are 2 picture links in the original post. You need to click those to see the photo.

Phil, I am using an iPhone, which shouldn't make any difference---but all I saw was a red flame bulb. where is the picture of the fixture located? Help

These are 1940's Christmas tree bulbs.

it will take me a while to get an answer - The guys I have to ask aren't on e-mail. I think a good electrician could rewire your door bells.

Hey Jane, where did you find the brass covers for the floor outlets? I came across some but they were REALLY big. I just wanted some that would just fit over the box, kind of like the one I already found. But I never saw a floor outlet with a bulb…

An electric outlet in the middle of the floor was quite common at one point. A library table in the middle of a room needed an outlet for a lamp. I have added them myself for clients. They come with nice brass covers that fit flush with the floor.…

How big is the shaft - width, not depth - How big is the kitchen alcove? are those sides concrete? any electrical outlets that seem to belong to it? I can't tell if the hole is framed around the shaft or just cut out and patched in. If it is framed…

I haven't seen one of those before. I found a strange outlet in the floor of my house that had a light bulb socket in it.

My husband, who knows machines and electricity, and followed his dad around in the 1930's, (carrying tools for him), looked at the picture for me. He said " twist lock receptacle for 220 circuit", "too small for a stove", then looked some more and…

I had one like that in my 1904 house. It was not hooked to the hot wires. It was hooked to wires similar to the door bell. We followed the wires and found they went to the kitchen. Since it was in the dining room we assumed it was some kind of a but…

I'll be interested in the answer to this, too, as I've seen outlets like this in old houses and often wondered what they are. (Sorry I couldn't be any help.)
