I am a professor of writing and a builder of websites and married to Jill Eicher, my partner in our old house adventure. We love everything Victorian. We have two dogs and two cats. Frieda, our basset hound is a star of You Tube videos.
Tell us about your old-house experiences and dreams:
Jill -- my then-girl friend (now wife) -- and I bought a wrecked fraternity house "as is" in 2000. It was a once-beautiful Victorian Brownstone in mid-town Baltimore. But it has sat abandoned and vandalized for nearly a year. Everyone thought we were crazy to take it on because we knew nothing about fixing an old house -- or any house.
The once-gorgeous three-story Queen Anne was our dream house. We learned a lot, we toughed it out, and in 2008 THIS OLD HOUSE magazine did a feature on our work. The adventure continues. We're deep, deep into renovation and preservation.
I am just amazed by the work youve done. Whats even more amazing is that our story is EACTLY the same as yours. And 1889 Victorian. Owned by a fraternity for 50 years. Completely ruined. Staircase balusters torn out with baseball bats. Origoinal detailing all lost except for evidence left behind. Years of restoration. I'm also a professor.
