"Grim death LOL Don't worry, I will! As far as the dormer, I talked to a man that grew up in the house during the mid 1940s and he said it was falling apart, so his father decided to just take it off. The porch was taken off before he lived…"

I don't have any of the Dover books for houses as new as 1904, and none of the 1800s reprint pattern books of mine have anything that resembles a foursquare or anything like your house. I am not sure that I would call your house a basic foursquare. It has the hipped roof, and I am guessing by calling it a foursquare that it has 4 rooms up and down, or 3 down with an entryway/stairway area. However, it seems different from the outside. Maybe Jane could weigh in.

Ah, your house had a full porch originally? That would alter the look. I wonder why anyone would remove a dormer. Trust me, I know that dormers can lead to roof valley leaks that are costly to repair, but surely demolishing one and patching in the roof, then shingling it would be a lot more expensive. I like those upper window sashes, by the way. Your neighbors who where aghast at you keeping them might have suggested the faux mission replacement windows, with the outer sash patterns, or other wrong pattern windows. I have _never_ actually seen those mission replacements put on a house that is appropriate for them. Hang on to yours like grim death.

Ohio! that's awesome! I went to college for Building Preservation and Restoration at Belmont Tech, which is in St. Clairsville, just the other side of the river from Wheeling, WV. You are not alone at all out there! Stop by just to meet everyone, you will be welcomed with open arms. When I was in school (I'm from MA) there were people of all ages (18-71!) from Cali, Minn, Canada, CT, Utah, Penn, FLA...everywhere! I loved it! The program has changed a little since I graduated, most noticably in the loss of Vicki Burton, who dealt with most of the artistic portions of the program. Dave Mertz is still the head professor, though, and a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Graduates are spread all over Ohio, WV, Penn and farther. The school would be an awesome place for you to make friends!
