What is the "Historical Cusp?"

I have a lot of friends and clients whose homes fall into something I like to call the Historical Cusp. 1st Floor Bathroom

The First Floor bathroom started out in the kitchen. It must have been added at some point, as it looks to have been a converted porch that was turned into either a maids quarters or apartment/bedroom.
