Rewiring the whole house. We could not help but to cut into the plaster walls and ceilings. Our contractor promised that he had a guy who would be able to patch it and make it look great. We are holding our breath. Below are sample pictures of how the wiring was run. At lease we did not have to damage the floors.
Comment by Shelley on February 17, 2012 at 7:50pm OMG!!! I need to have this done too BUT...we've replaced some of the knob and tube with each room I'm working on. Found out 1/2 of the house is on one circuit! I found a great plaster repair guy to fix the cut walls. What I'm having done is running new line to each room and doing it all then-for that room. Then the electrician caps off and duct tapes the end of that section of knob and tube and leaves in the wall. We got rid of a lot of it when we took down the basement ceilings with no damage!!! When we remodeled a 2nd floor bath, I had the electrician put another electrical panel in the attic so the 2nd floor and attic will be run to that panel.
Because we financed the house, we had to get the renovation loan, which pushed us to do a lot of work ASAP. In the end, I will be glad we did it that way, as the house will be done...for the most part. So, we had all the electrical done at once. We are almost done, only the kitchen and the bath off the kitchen remain. That work is in progress this week.
I hope you have a plan of the final configuration, even if it takes a year or more. I thought the same thing about a panel in the attic, but the electrician wired it up for us so that we only have the one in the basement. We will eventually have a bath and another finished room in the attic. We have one room up there already.
Another thing about planning it out, is all the multi-switches such as the stairways and the halls. The original had only one switch somewhere. Rewiring allowed switches at the top and bottom of stairs, and both ends of the halls.
Once we committed to opening the walls and ceilings, it did not matter how much we had to do. Now that the plaster guy is almost doen, it is amazing how it all blends in. I will be posting some pictures of the work before we start painting.
We left all the old wiring in the walls, at least where it was not in the way.
